Together but separate: decoupled Variscan (late Carboniferous) and Alpine (Late Cretaceous–Paleogene) inversion tectonics in NW Poland

چکیده

Abstract. In Europe, formation of the Palaeozoic Variscan orogenic belt, and Mesozoic–Cenozoic Alpine–Carpathian belt led to a widespread inversion events within forelands both domains. We used legacy 2-D seismic data together with newly acquired 3-D that, for first time, precisely imaged sub-Zechstein (i.e. sub-evaporitic) upper successions in NW Poland order develop quantitative, balanced model late Palaeozoic–recent evolution this area, characterised by complex pattern repeated extension inversion. Four main tectonic phases have been determined: (1) Late Devonian–early Carboniferous subsidence possibly related extensional reactivation Caledonian thrusts, (2) caused orogeny, (3) Permo-Mesozoic development Polish Basin (4) its Cretaceous–Paleogene Alpine structures form superimposed multilayer system, mechanically decoupled Zechstein evaporites.

Late orogenic carboniferous extensions in the Variscan French Massif Central

The Variscan French Massif Central experienced two successive stages of extension from Middle Carboniferous to Early Permian. In the northern Massif Central, the first stage began in the late Visean, immediately after nappe stacking, and is well recorded by NamurianWestphalian synkinematic plutonism. The Middle Carboniferous leucogranites widespread in the NW Massif Central (Limousin and Sioule...

Fire ecology of a Late Carboniferous floodplain, Joggins, Nova Scotia

The facies distribution and palaeobotanical identity of fossil charcoal is described from the Upper Carboniferous (Westphalian A–B) Joggins section, Nova Scotia, in order to examine the fire ecology of early Westphalian floodplains. Three charcoal assemblages are noted. Assemblage (1) consists of channel sandstone bodies, containing beds of calcrete breccia, cordaite logs (up to 3 m long), and ...

Late orogenic exhumation of the Variscan high‐grade units

[1] The current structure of the South Armorican Domain in the French Variscan Belt, provides an excellent record of the late orogenic evolution, as documented by the complex interactions between extensional structures and partial melting. In the Golfe du Morbihan, the South Brittany Migmatite Belt (SBMB), tectonically overlain by non‐melted metamorphic units, was studied by combined structural...

Geomorphic and structural assessment of active tectonics in NW Alborz

Alborz Mountains is a region of active deformation within Arabia-Eurasia collision zone. The study fault system in western Alborz comprises abundant evidence of active faulting accompanied by occurrence of historical earthquakes. Active tectonics of Manjil-Rudbar fault zone whose movement caused destructive 1990 Manjil-Rudbar earthquake was concentrated in this article through geomorphic and st...
